When you’re a baby, your “first” everything is magical. Easter, Christmas, turning one year old — all has the glow of the new, and the miraculous, about it. And Halloween is no exception.
As far as baby’s first Halloween costume goes, all the usual endearing ideas abound. You can find baby bees and baby devils; baby angels and baby rabbits; baby bears and baby kitties. And all of these get-ups are always an adorable pleasure to see. But what if you’re looking for a costume that really stands out from the crowd, and that’s as unique as your baby’s first Halloween itself ought to be?
The below ideas range from the merely clever to the downright eccentric, but originality is always a great thing, whatever it entails. Your baby may be too young for trick-or-treating, but he or she will definitely be the cutest (and most memorable) eye candy on the block — if you can manage to pull these concepts off.
Baby as Rapunzel and parent as a tower
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair,” is a familiar fairytale chant. So why not make this classic tale into a wonderfully inventive costume? This idea comes to us from Megan, a mom who submitted her DIY project on Costume Works, and it’s both ingenious and easy to make.
As Megan explains, because her daughter was so small, she wanted to “incorporate dad” into the get-up, since he would be the one toting baby around all night. After painting bricks and tower like vines on dad’s pants, Megan fashioned dad’s hat (or a “roof”) from construction paper cut to look like shingles.
Though Megan sewed her daughter’s Rapunzel wig out of yellow yarn herself, any blonde (and correctly sized) wig would likely work for this costume. Then you need a princessy-looking baby gown, a baby carrier, and viola! You’re basically a walking storybook. With an adorable little princess as the star of the show. Just make sure your little Rapunzel’s hair isn’t long enough for you to trip over.
Baby as a spider and parent as a web
Halloween is definitely the time for dusty old cobwebs and delightfully haunted houses. But when you have a newborn, why not just be a new spun web, with an adorable little spider at its core? You can fashion your web from netting, and baby spider costumes, themselves, are plentiful.
Even if you can’t manage to locate something exactly like the garb depicted in this photo, you can certainly rig something similar up. And your little spider will be sure to draw your fellow Halloween revelers into a veritable “web” of intrigue.
If you want to get really creative, you can even Velcro various items to your web that got “stuck” — think fake flies. But it’ll be your little arachnid who will really be the centerpiece, and your fellow Halloween partygoers will practically be climbing the walls (get it?) with delight.
Maleficent and baby Aurora
When Disney released 2014’s Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, it was a major hit, and introduced the world to a brand new variation on Sleeping Beauty. Spoiler: in this version, Maleficent eventually learns to love little baby Aurora, and becomes a mother of sorts to her. That’s one reason why this is the perfect mother-baby daughter costume for Halloween.
The other reason, of course, is that Maleficent, with her black-horned headdress, vampire-like black gowns, pale skin, and dramatic dark red lipstick, is positively made for Halloween. Baby Aurora, on the other hand, is like a ray of vampire-blinding sunlight. But that, as they say, is the way the story goes.
Plus, Aurora’s costume as a baby is simple and comfy. And if your baby sleeps through the whole Halloween party? Well, she is supposed to be a sleeping beauty, after all. So in a way, the slumber actually kind of completes the costume.
